Uniform

Our School Uniform

Dressing our children for a more active childhood

We’re proud to be part of the Active Uniform Alliance (AUA) and have taken a pledge to adopt an ‘always active uniform’ in our school. This change will support all of our children to be more active throughout the whole school day, enabling them to make seamless transitions between focused classroom learning and physical activity.

Pupils can wear grey trousers, shorts, skorts or skirts (preferably with shorts underneath) with a white or red polo which can have the St Thomas logo.

All pupils should have a red sweatshirt, cardigan or fleece which again can have the St Thomas logo on or not.

Socks and tights should be white, black or grey and black trainers (especially welcome for active girls) suitable for a day of climbing and running in school. Please note coloured trainers are not permitted as part of the school uniform but can be worn on PE days. Children are permitted to wear small stud earrings but for safety reasons, not other jewellery is to be worn.

Most items are available in supermarkets. The school logo may be worn if you choose but is not compulsory. Items with logos are sold at Thomas Moore – Fore Street Exeter.

We’re still working through what this will look like in practice, but the updated uniform will include items like non-white polos or t-shirts, joggers or leggings, sweatshirts, and sturdy trainers. This updated uniform will maintain the smart appearance that we value, while removing unnecessary barriers to physical engagement. For girls, especially, this change offers liberation from uniforms that have historically limited their participation in spontaneous play and active learning.

We look forward to sharing more information with you soon and to hearing your feedback on our plans as they develop! In the meantime, take a look at the #ActiveUniformAlliance website for more information about the benefits of always active uniforms, here:

PE Kit

Pupils will need a white/red t-shirt which can have the St Thomas logo, plain black shorts, jogging bottoms or leggings and trainers. PE kit is to be worn to school when your child has PE on that day.

During PE, for health and safety reasons, children must not wear earrings or jewellery. Children should remove their own earrings and store them safely or parents/carers should remove them at the start of the school day. Staff cannot remove earrings for children. Alternatively, surgical tape could be used to cover any earrings during PE on the day of your child’s PE lesson.

Please see our PE kit poster here.
