MFL (French) Progression Points (pdf)

At our school, we follow the Language Angels curriculum to make learning French fun, engaging and meaningful. We believe that learning a foreign language opens a window to the wider world — helping children appreciate other cultures, develop curiosity, and see the value of communication across different communities.

Our French lessons focus on building confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, while encouraging children to have a go, make connections and enjoy learning a new language. Through songs, games, stories and role-play, pupils learn to express themselves, understand others, and celebrate the richness of French language and culture.

National Curriculum Links

Our teaching follows the National Curriculum for Languages (2014), which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways to communicate what they want to say, and improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write for different purposes and audiences, using key vocabulary and grammatical structures they have learned.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

The Language Angels scheme supports these aims through a structured progression of units from Year 3 to Year 6. Children revisit key words and phrases while gradually building grammar and sentence structure knowledge, helping them to become confident, capable and independent French speakers.

Learning in Action

In French lessons, pupils might practise greetings and classroom phrases, learn songs about numbers or animals, or hold simple conversations about themselves and their interests. As they progress, they move on to reading and writing short texts, describing places and people, and exploring French culture — from food and festivals to life in France today.

REACH and Learning for Life

Our REACH values — Respect, Equality, Aspiration, Community and Harmony — are woven through our French curriculum. Children learn to respect and value different cultures, embrace equality by understanding diverse ways of life, show aspiration by challenging themselves to use new vocabulary, and build a sense of community and harmony through shared language learning.

Our Learning for Life skills — Noticing, Thinking, Speaking and Listening, Teamwork and Perseverance — play a key role in language learning. Pupils notice patterns in pronunciation and spelling, think about grammar and meaning, speak and listen carefully in conversation, work as a team in games and dialogues, and persevere when learning new and tricky words.

Through the Language Angels curriculum, children not only gain language skills but also develop confidence, curiosity and cultural understanding — skills that will stay with them for life.
