Geography

At our school, we follow the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, which inspires children to be curious about the world and the people who live in it. We want every child to develop a lifelong fascination with the planet — understanding where places are, what they are like, and how people and environments are connected. Our geography teaching follows the National Curriculum for Geography, which aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop a sense of place, understanding the world’s people, places and environments.
  • Build knowledge about diverse locations, both locally and globally.
  • Understand key physical and human processes, and how these shape the world we live in.
  • Use fieldwork, maps and data to collect, analyse and present geographical information.

Through engaging lessons, children explore their local area as well as the wider world, developing knowledge of human and physical geography and an understanding of how people interact with and impact the environment. Pupils also learn how they can take action to protect and care for our planet.

Building Knowledge and Skills

Through the Kapow Primary Geography curriculum, children develop key geographical skills that reflect the expectations of the National Curriculum, including how to:

  • Collect, analyse and communicate data from first-hand experiences and fieldwork.
  • Interpret maps, diagrams, globes and photographs to make sense of places and environments.
  • Explain physical and human features such as rivers, mountains, cities, weather and population.
  • Communicate their understanding in different ways — through maps, diagrams, writing and digital tools.

Our lessons encourage children to ask questions, investigate, and think deeply about how the world works. By learning through enquiry and exploration, pupils gain a strong sense of place and a deeper understanding of their responsibility as citizens of the world.

At our school, geography helps children to see how people, places and nature are all connected — inspiring them to care for our world today and for the future.

REACH and Learning for Life

Our geography curriculum is closely linked to our REACH values — Respect, Equality, Aspiration, Community and Harmony. As children learn about different countries and communities, they develop respect for others, recognise equality across cultures, and grow a strong sense of community and harmony as global citizens. We encourage aspiration by helping pupils see how their curiosity and care can make a positive difference in the world.

We also embed our Learning for Life skills — Noticing, Thinking, Speaking and Listening, Teamwork and Perseverance — throughout geography lessons. Children learn to notice details in maps and patterns, think critically about human and physical changes, speak and listen to share ideas, work together on investigations, and persevere when solving geographical challenges.
